Thanks Peter. I remember now that we've had some of this conversation before regarding 'Gynsbrok'! The RAF ORB for Atcham stops near the end of 1943 but I suspect that the islet was not used for dive-bombing until maybe March/April 44 during the build-up prior to Normandy.

That would make sense. A lot of new air to around gunnery, R/P and DB ranges appeared at that time, many temporary. I assume the Atcham unit supplied replacements so it would be useful to give refresher or theatre training.

The 495th Fighter Training Group at Atcham did exactly what you assume and was sometimes referred to as a CCRC - Combat Crew Replacement Center, to use the American spelling. Effectively, it was the USAAF equivalent of an OTU for P-47 pilots. Responsibility for P-38 training transferred from Goxhill in August 1944 when the 496th FTG became an all P-51 unit.
