The plaque by the mine in the first batch says:- German Sea Mine type DZ. One of hundreds laid against Allied shipping around the Channel Islands. On June 17th 1943 two Guernsey fishermen were blown-up by a similar mine off HERNE.

I have some similar shots from around that time. I loved the place and it was empty when we went just after Easter. The castle in St Peter Port was great and still had a lot of remains of the German occupation including names bunkers. The best thing was the feeling of being back in the 70's. Early closing and no Sunday trading.
The German part of the cemetery near St Peter Port was interesting and when we visited there was a German family visiting the grave of a member of their family.
I forgot to mention the firing of the gun at midday everday at the castle. I knew how loud it will be, having watched artillery fire at an air show many moons ago, but the rest got a fright!

The first thirteen were taken at Weymouth May 5th 2008, just along from the ferry port.

A few from Jersey, None of the things we discovered were actually signposted like the above Gun and plaque. The underground Hospital was though, no-doubt because you have to pay...

Went to the underground hospital on Guernsey but it was 10 mins from closing and it takes 45mins to do the tour.
The guy at the kiosk said we were the second set of customers that day! Pity we flew home the next day.

The view of the German vehicle from inside the museum was taken from the small aperture just behind the seat outside the entrance. the other view is what the guards would have seen of any attacks. This museum is housed inside one of those large gun enplacements as shown in the Guernsey photographs. There were dozens of them on both Islands. The small building nearby had a gun on the top. It's now hired out for B+B.

Last few photographs, First one shows another of those German observation towers, converted for todays use. The eyes from Winston Churchill have been vandalised on the stone. Lastly Liberation Square and plaque. I took these on 9-5-08 Their national holiday, Liberation-Day. There were vechicle displays, Drive-pasts, March pasts Fly-pasts. All the population seemed to be in Liberation Square that day. Shame we had to leave later...

Copy from a postcard I bought. This is a German Naval Observation Tower At Pleinmont, Guernsey, Built in 1942. I think it's a very modern looking structure for it's day ! Still dosen't look out of place !! Anyone got any different views on this ??
