You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

Nice to see these pics, Cheers Paul. I have always wanted to visit Blue Barns but no idea where it is. I doubt much is left there now?

Plenty of information via Google Richard. Just to the north of Colchester.

The hangar is in the background of the first pic, used by USAAF during WWII.

I had never heard of this and I live in Colchester and grew up in a village to the north of Britain's First City!! As Richard says, you learn something new every day.

The hangar was used by RAF Boxted and was a vehicle maintenance facility, the site is more or less opposite Boxted airfield at Blue Barns Farm within NGR TM 0329 square although the buildings were closer to the A12: Clubhouse TM 02785 30100 and hangar TM 02713 30087. The clubhouse was removed between 2006 and 2009 and the hangar before 2005. No evidence now of the airfield. We have pictures of the hangar.

There was also an Army airstrip in the garrison to the south of Colchester. I think there was a hangar there too but I've lost the details; they were shown in the Helicopter Landing Site directory published by No 1 AIDU back in the '70s.
There were 2 strips, gras,s at right angles each about 1500ft long; ample for a Beaver or Auster.
