On 10/04/42, a XV Sqn Stirling - N3703 LS-G departed Alconbury at 2235 for Ops Essen. Over the target the aircraft sustained Flak damage, however the aircraft limped back to the UK

On it's first approach to land, the aircraft was forced to overshoot and climb away as other aircraft landed ahead without permission. As the aircraft circled for a second approach, an already damaged oil pipe fractured and both Starboard engines seized. The Pilot lost control of the aircraft which crashed close to Rectory Farm, Cow Lane, Godmanchester at 0435 on 11/04/42. The P and MUG were killed, the remaining crew survived - although some of these subsequently lost their lives later in the war

I visited the site on 14/09/09, the memorial was only dedicated on Sat 09/09/17

Tony
