One of the sections of this, as there were several parts of the pipeline, ran through and down Shanklin chine in the Island.
Operation Pluto consisted of a number of shore sections and multiple groups of pipelines, the section crossing to the island from Stoney point was codenamed 'SOHO', the Isle of Wight was codenamed 'BAMBI', the pipes across to the D-Day landings were codenamed 'WATSON' while further east along the coast Dungeness was codenamed 'DUMBO' and the pipes from there were codenamed 'DUMBO FAR'.
A section of pipeline still exists and runs down through the chine (think small ravine) at this picturesque tourist spot. There is a small exhibition showing how the pipeline was laid at the visitors centre at the end of the chine itself.
The fuel was pumped from Sandown Fort (now Sandown Zoo) to Shanklin via the chine and then down to a pumping station on the Esplanade that has long since gone.
From left to right:
The steep chine itself.
The remaining pipeline(3 frames)

Slightly off-subject - but also in Shanklin at the Summerland Amusements on the Esplanade you will find a hangar that was originally built at RFC Bembridge for the aircraft of 412 & 413Flt(later 253 Squadron.)

Denis, I'm confused by the captions on the welding machine image. The left hand says the whereabouts of the machine is unknown, the right implies that the object in the picture IS the machine (or at least half of it!). Can you elaborate?

Your very last picture; is that a section of pipeline showing external protection?

The item in the crate is a cross-sectioned pipeline joint, and shows the copper sealing discs in the middle.
The joint is for the HAIS type of PLUTO pipe, which is what the length seen in the next photo is.

For those who enjoy reading and looking at pictures - QUAND L'OR NOIR by Philippe Bauduin, ISBN 2 84048 187 1

Both French and English text - looking at oil supply problems and how they were overcome, Pluto forming the nucleus of the story.

There is a lovely 'postscript' describing how in June 1949 - although the storage tanks in England were by then empty - oil was still flowing when required from a pipeline on the mudflats at Querqueville near Cherbourg (under the descrete guidance of the navy who owned the area, and benefiting local Navy, Army and Governement departments, and maybe a few locals who'd learned of it!). The 80 mile pipeline contained around 264,000 US gallons. It is not known when it finally stopped flowing.

I shall look out for that Osgood, many thanks.
According to the display in the Shanklin chine, most of the undersea pipes were recovered after the war. Seems strange when so much other war material was left in place.
