Jakob and I found this site, just off RAF Spittlegate near to the VOSA site in Grantham.

We had a little walk around and spotted a footpath sign so we toddled off, a quick little session of photos, a little game of tag and then we were off on another father and son adventure.

However he still wants one of the ammo boxes for his toys.

Oh and spotted a pillbox in the next field too.

Don't really know but i'll take a trip back to get a closer photo of ref numbers and may stop by the barracks and ask for one, the rectangular ones would make a good toy box and the tubular ones, well, erh, eureka, umbrella stands!!!!!!!!

Very interesting.

The ammo boxes appear to have contained 6 (possibly 120mm) APDS or Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot rounds. The Wikipedia entry went way over my head though. Apparently were used as main armament in British tanks. Perhaps the round cylinders were individual cases for 155mm rounds used by Self Propelled Guns?

Kevin Mears

Looks as if the pongos have left their trash behind!

The bomb store was a pre-war layout to AM Drawing 3054/36.

The individual stores (six in each of two groups) appear to have been demolished leaving only the traverses.

If the pillbox was in the field just to the North of the site then it is a type 26. A shortage of timber forced the contractors to use bricks as shuttering on many pillboxes. After pouring the concrete the bricks were left in situ.

From May 91

I might have one with the bomb dump on somewhere, but it's never wise to hang around in-use military sites with a history of gliding activity. Looks like an RC day today though.

Grantham Airfield is best known as RAF Spittlegate.

The Pillbox is a Type 24 with brick shuttering. Is it the one in a field just north of the Bomb Stores?

The Bomb Store is pre-war to AM Drawing 3054/36 but the individual buildings (six in each group) have been demolished leaving just the traverses.
