Hi,

I work with Iain and he has brought this web site to my attention and I have quite a bit if information I can pass on about the current state on RAF Binbrook.

Firstly ownership:
Apart from the housing there are at least 7 different owner covering the site.
The most northerly 2 H Blocks, the Gymnasium and the site of the Refectory are owned (or perhaps his receivers own) by Lincoln Fraser you might have heard of him, Goggle for Imperial Consolidated.
The Rest of the H Blocks, and the Parade Ground/Car Park are in another persons ownership, I do have his name some where.
The Officers Mess is owned by a couple from Grimsby who have planning permission to knock it down and build 7 (I think) Luxury Houses, however the permission will expire after 5 years (1 or 2 remaining I think) unless they have started to build the new houses, some thing I don't see happening the the current climate!
The Gate House, HQ, Opps, SQ, Morgue, and Hangers 1,2,4,5 (I think) are owned by Winchester Marine, a Marine Salvage Company. They are responsible for most of what you can see out on the apron. In the hangers are also Classic Pine Furniture and CK Polymers I am not sure if they own or rent. The Gate House HQ, Opps, SQ and Morgue are all currently for sale
The run way and QRS are owned by a farmer and the run way has all been taken up now.
The Avionics Building is owned by Credenzer Seafoods
The rest of the site including Hanger 3 is owned by Binbrook Trading Estate Ltd. This company was bought in May 2008 by 3 private investors. Rachael the woman mentioned works for this company and is on site Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, building 30 being the one at the base of the Water Tower. We have not directly been given the names of the directors, but I did do a company search to find out who they are.

Recent happenings on the site:
Any one who had recently been in the SQ will know it was full of TVs, these have all been cleared out and the grounds tidied up, presumably in an attempted to help the sale.
A number of shipping containers (8 I think) have appeared on the Gate House Car Park and a security fence is now being put up around them.

Site Plan:
The Valuation Office Certainly has a plan of the site with all the building numbers on it as I caught site of it when we had our building valued for business rates. I may also have a partial copy of this, I will have a look for it.

binbrook74, you might also be able to help I was wondering what this hole in the ground was outside Hanger 3?

I have found another batch. I had hoped it was part of the visit above, which shows the tower extant, but alas it isn't. These are from June 97, after the filming of "Memphis Belle" when both towers were removed.
I have happy memories of this place, I was first here as a space cadet 17 to 23 Aug 74 (no, I'm not that much of a cabbage to remember the dates, just my Record of Service is to hand!) and was part of the crowd on the "Farewell to the Lightning" display in 1998. (Boy did I get wet!)
Anyway, because there may be the possibility that I don't have the previous coverage any more, here are all twelve images I took on this occasion.

Barrier location this side of the piano keys.

Now, I figured that most PPLs would do What I have just done & photo the runways & hangars, so I concentrated on the bomb dump, just to ensure a record.

C'mon Petertheeater, what are we looking at here?!

I stopped off at Binbrook yesterday, it was'nt a good day for photos, however "i'll be back"

So the story goes like this.

Drove onto the site, got a few pictures, nothing special due to the mist, thanks for the warning ST, however I was told you can photograph anywhere apart from "HIS Hanger" which is owned by a religous group, they had the Harrier in the compound.

did see a stripped harrier, an old steam engine, old fire engines:

The Harrier was in a private compound and I should'nt really have taken the picture of it:

then drove round to the memorial:

and met this rather decent chap called Ray:

He did say he needs some help with decent sheeting to cover up some of the artifacts and also it appears he's working hard on his own, if only I lived nearer, (could move I suppose).

He was errecting a flag pole for Sunday, and also spoke of various projects of restoration and rebuilding, he did say "the RAF are reclaiming the site back"

I'll be meeting Ray agian as he was chief observer in ROC post #17, something i'm interested in and i'd like to extract some stories and info from him also to help out when I can.

I'm sure some of us could help the worthwhile cause and also this really decent chap!

Hi Pug

I'm building a 3d version of Binbrook for Microsoft's flight simulator and I'm certain the active runway was only 7500ft, even if you add on the 600ft overrun/turnaround areas at both ends of the runway it still doesn't reach 9000ft, it's just shy at 8700ft. But these areas wouldn't have been used as the active runway length.

Same with Leconfield, Active runway was 7500ft with 2 turnaround/overrun areas of 600ft, Leconfield was assigned a dispersal airfield as was Middleton St George again it's runway length being 7516ft again with 600ft overrun areas.

Leeming another dispersal airfield had a similar runway length of 7518ft, but no overrun/turnaround areas where built.

I'm sure I read somewhere but cant find the source that one of the requirement for a dispersal airfield was a runway between 7500ft and 9000ft.

;)

And something I should have said earlier is that Binbrook still lives on in the RAF. The structure of a station being divided in to 3 wings; Operations, Engineering and Admin was first used here. It is still the basis today although the names have changed over the years and some stations have four wings.

Well had my little road trip today even tho it was extremely cold there adn gettin windy .
Hd a good view around the officers mess and officers quarters(Alcatraz as its called).
Sadly the mess well is a mess.It has just about been stripped of every fittin and in such a bad state to where i think demlition is the only answer left as its quite dangerous in places .
The officers quarters has been badly vandalised even down to smashing just about every light switch in there.
At the top of the building i was surprised to find one intact bathroom area which wasn smashed to pieces but as every single window in the place has been broken the place is wet through.
Was very surprised to see the carpets were still in place in most of the rooms although drenched.
Seems like some of the locals have made it there home in some rooms as temporary tables and fireplaces made up.
Glad i had someone with me as dont quite like the idea of being in there alone as a very eerie place .
Will post pics up later.
