As Kevin stated, that is the first memorial to all that served at Binbrook.

Not perfect, the dates are wrong. But thanks anyway.

Report in the Grimsby Telegraph;

http://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/New-memorial-unveiled-ensure-role-Binbrook/story-22066018-detail/story.html

New memorial unveiled to ensure the role of Binbrook airfield is never forgotten

distinguished history: The Reverend John Carr, vicar of Brookenby, dedicates the new memorial at Brookenby Community Centre, pictured with villagers and dignitaries after the unveiling. Inset, Les Bradbury, left, and standard bearer Marilyn Jones, of Waltham Royal British Legion, right.

THE community of Brookenby came together to recall the distinguished history of the former Binbrook airfield.

A new memorial to those who flew from the base in the Second World War and never returned has been unveiled.

Aviation charity, the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust, has worked alongside the community to ensure the significance of former airfields, and the people who served there, is never forgotten.

The RAF bomber, and later fighter base, opened in June 1940 and was home to many of the most familiar aircraft in RAF service – Lancasters, flown by the Australian-manned No 460 Squadron, Lincolns and both the Canberra and Lightning aircraft.

Between 1965 and 1988, intruding Russian aircraft over the North Sea would encounter Binbrook-based aircraft, operated by the 5 and 11 Squadrons.

The base was closed in 1989 and Brookenby grew up from the service married quarters.

Kenneth Bannerman, head of the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust, said: "We are delighted to be paying tribute to this historic site and hope our memorials will help ensure present and future generations will never forget the sacrifice of war. Airfields in general are a much neglected part of British history and our charity exists to help preserve, and raise the profile of these important places."

Unveiling the memorial, Les Bradbury, of Grimsby, said: "I was officially the last serviceman to be demobbed from here. I slept my last nights in the guardroom, a cold and spooky building. I handed over the keys to the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works. I feel really honoured to unveil the memorial."

Leading prayers, the Reverend John Carr said: "This memorial has been erected to remind us of the service and sacrifice of the men and women who served here. By day and night they waged war for our peace."

Chair of Brookenby Parish Council, Mark Ardern, added: "It is something that has brought the community together."

They all paid tribute to resident Margaret Quaggan, who was instrumental in organising the event.
