The RAF inherited the Naval stocks of AMRAAMs when the Sea Harrier was withdrawn-some 200 odd rounds(?) they were an early model and perhaps this order will replace them for use on the retained tranche 1 Typhoons...

I gather that these are for, as said above, the squadrons of Tranche 1 Typhoons which will be assigned to the Air to Air role, since they do not, and will not, support meteor and also to give the F-35 Lighning II an initial long range Air to Air capability until they are updated/qualified for Meteor in about 2024
