On Thursday 05/05/16 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of RAF Wittering and commemorate those who have lost their lives, a Roll of Remembrance (RoR) was unveiled in the Station Heritage Centre (SHC).
The panels list the names of 377 individuals, service or civilian who have lost their lives, for whatever reason whilst serving at either; RFC Stamford, RFC Easton-on-the-Hill, RAF Collyweston or RAF Wittering between 1916- 2016.
Their names are recorded in the books alongside an additional 59 personnel from other units who have also lost their lives at either the bases listed above or are buried in the CWGC plot in the village cemetery. This RoR is a "live" project and as such Vol 4 has been designed to have extra entries added A/R up to the end of 2016. Vol 5 will commence in 2017 >.
The project has taken 2.5 years to research, compile and complete and it is believed that RAF Wittering are now the first unit to have introduced a RoR of this specific type as it remembers all personnel losses including; combat losses, aircraft accidents, industrial accidents, road traffic collisions, natural causes, self inflicted injuries etc.
Hope it's of interest?
