In 1944, a unit known as No. 105 M.A.R.U. was deployed from the UK to the Continent as part of the ‘Big Ben’ programme to disrupt the supposed radio guidance system of the V2 rocket. A search has drawn a blank on the meaning of the initials and, indeed, has been unable to discover anything about the presumed other 104 such units. Any ideas, anybody?

Just because it was called 105 doesnt mean there were actually 104 others, the forces dont always use numbers in sequence. As for MARU, my guess is the M= Mobile and U =Unit. As for the other 2, A is most likely Aircraft and R could be either Reporting or Recce.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

I think my father was involved with this at Leiston just outside the USAAF base.

Thanks to all respondents. That moves me along a bit. EGNK — is your father still around and, thus, able to tell us more?
