My Grandparents lived in a tied cottage adjacent to the main runway at NL at Wytchley Warren, I recall the RCAF using this as a base in the early '50's, I flew in a Meteor NF12 WS594 in 1956 as a 17 year old RAF Apprentice that was the ride of my life.

My father was stationed here late in WWII when walking as a very young boy from Empingham to Wytchley Warren a Halifax/Lancaster had crashed in a wood. Sadly all on board were killed.

Hi John,

Do you now if there's a memorial to the incident you refer to?

Indeed, if anyone has the identities of the aircraft involved, drop us a line.

The Harrier is GR.3 XV804/O. This was just a quick check though but it's been there for quite a while now.

The GR3 has been there for many a year, and certainly looked quite worn and tired when I exercised there with Joint Force Harrier in 2003, it was quite nice to see the GR7/7As operating from this historic old airfield for several days.

Had a great time looking over this brilliant airfield this afternoon....Certainly one of my fave sites!!

The main site including the tower and hangars is still in use by the MOD.

Below- Makes a change to photo things like this on an old airfield..

Nice to see the Harrier is still in one piece (almost!) ..
..Unlike this poor old Hunter -
Phantom at the end of the main runway, sadly not about to roll-

Thor pads -

Nice shots Stevie, how did you get to photograph what you did, i take it you went through the gate on the peri track near the golf course, i saw it was open when i went a few weeks back but didn't have the balls to venture within. Maybe if i did i'd have got to see what you did, it's just the sight of the gun toting guards on the main gate that put me off.

Cheers chaps,

Jason -The guards are quite freindly to be honest. I went in through the golf course enterance.

PNK - The airfield is used today by the Army and the MOD. I think the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron still use the site as a satellite for Wittering.
