Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite .

There are several points of interest regarding the list.

1) The MCU numbers were generated on a Group basis, i.e. first 18`, then 16, then 19 Group etc. I wonder why - it's as if the units existed and were numbered later.

2) There are several numbers missing, e.g. 18/19/20, 33/34/35, as if to leave space for further units within a particular Group

3) Detachments have the same MCU number as the parent - confusing

4) Although many of these units were extant in 1942, they are not listed in earlier versions of SD161- Location of units in the Royal Air Force

I have found the whole marine craft setup totally confusing and have yet to find a primary source that explains how it was setup prior to 1942. Maybe that would be too easy anyway.

As my particular interest is their use on ranges it seems to me that some marine craft were assigned to other named units before they became autonomous. The armoured boats and pinnaces at Bridlington would be included in the Armament Training Camp at Skipsea likewise with all the other ATC and later ATS and APC (until MCU's were formed). Where the ATS was closed the replacing target towing flight would effectively control the ranges and, I believe the range related marine craft too.

The biggest problem is that all the affordable RAF MCU histories almost entirely focus on the more sexy ASR side, and probably quite rightly but all fail to cover the range work.

I have no idea about TRV (torpedo recovery vessels) and assume they were attached to the TTU's. And I believe that moorings vessels were private pre-war but probably MAP controlled in wartime. Why MAP, who were also responsible for targets?

I have a chapter on Marine craft earmarked for my book but it is so full of holes.

Maybe someone out there can help with marine craft organisation before, during and after the war?
