Update sent to me on 15th July 2014;

USAAF 34th Bomb Group War Memorial Appeal:

Dear All,

Apologies for the length of time in providing you with an update regarding the Appeal- in many ways this has been positive as we have been so busy with different aspects of the project.

The Appeal now stands at £22500 which is brilliant. You will already have seen the details of our coach trip to Duxford earlier today, supported as well by a generous cheque which will boost the fund further- thank you Galloways. Our local businesses have really showed their support for the project and helped contribute a significant amount to the Appeal -thank you.

We have also had another tranche of money from the States with some donating a second time and are still getting personal donations, some in dedication from those who served or were lost from the British Armed Forces. Our local organisations are also supporting the project including Mendlesham Community Council, Mendlesham WI and Mendlesham Over 60's.

Instructions have been given to our Stone Carver, who has been busy asking questions and preparing the final design, based as close as possible to the stolen plaque. Our American friends have been very supportive answering questions about goggles,bracelets/id tags and even obtaining a photograph of the original plaque from Ed Berge, son of sculptor Henry Berge. It is interesting to see the plaque in its original state, before aging.

Plans are now well ahead with the work starting on the rest of the memorial. Contractors have been appointed and site meetings held. Work will start the week commencing 22 September. Arrangements have been made to place a brick from the old memorial into the centre of the new to continue the link with the past.

Just a warning for those who may not know, but when the memorial is finished, the flints will be covered with a milky white covering. This is normal and will weather to shiny black very quickly.

Everyone is extremely welcome to attend the Remembrance Service at St Mary's Church, Mendlesham, at 9.30am on Sunday 9th November and the Memorial dedication by the Bishop of Richborough outside in the Churchyard at 11.30am.

We have already been advised that we will have visitors from the States, including a Veteran and hope as many as possible will join us. For those unable to make the journey, we will be recording the event so that they can share this with us.

Update sent to me on 25th September 2014;

USAAF 34th Bomb Group War Memorial project

Firstly apologies if you receive this information in more than one format, we are really trying hard to keep everyone informed about the project and believe it is better to let you know twice rather than not at all!

We have lots of good news to report, so in no particular order.....

Project Appeal Fund: This now stands at just over £27,000 and since February which is amazing. Thank you everyone. Donations are still coming in and will still be very welcome. We have recently received £500 from Wetheringsett Parish Council and £2000 from Walter Hines Page Chapter, National Society Daughters of The American Revolution. see http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engwhdar/walterhinesdar/index.html ; for more information about this organisation- another example of good US/UK relationships.

We now have sufficient to cover the commissioning of the memorial itself and funds which should provide a reserve to pay an annual insurance. Any more received will be kept purely for the needs of the memorial such as any maintenance costs that may be required in a few years time. I dont think any of us want to think that the memorial will be put at risk again?

Building works: The stone carver has the slate for the central plaque and is working on the design. Subject to anything happening outside his control such as ill heath, everything is on track. The contractors have started on site this week. The area has been marked out and checked by the Architect and a digger should arrive on Thursday. We hope to put photographs of the works in progress on our website shortly. http://www.mendlesham.onesuffolk.net/

Events for the weekend commencing 7th November:

Friday 7th November: St Marys Church, Mendlesham 7.30pm. Organised by the Friends of St Marys. Wattisham Military Wives Choir with a medley of music from WW11. Tickets to include refreshments £10 per head from Marjorie Rousseau tel 01449 766726. ( American visitors to be our guests, please contact Sharon Jones email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Sunday 9th November: St Marys Church , Mendlesham 9.30am Remembrance Service, 11.30am Memorial Dedication in the churchyard by the Bishop of Richborough.
All are very welcome to attend these events.

We currently have between 30-35 visitors, including four veterans planning to join us for the weekend. On the Sunday afternoon there will be an invitation only event for those who have contributed financially or in another significant way to the project. We are really sorry that we cannot invite everyone, but the licence for the community centre means numbers are limited. Invitations have gone out and if you have received one and not RSVP please can you do so. If you have contributed and not received an invitation, please contact Sharon as above.

Residents of Mendlesham, please accept our apologies in advance but we hope you will support and understand, as that weekend will see lots of visitors, traffic and noise. Not only will we have visitors from the States but also visitors from other parts of the UK.

Recognition of donations: Donations have been received from those who did not want any public recognition, those that did and many of you that just popped a cheque in the post and did not say. We have also had donations made in honour or memory of someone. We have given this some thought and our plan is to have a draft record of those donors wishing recognition and those made in honour, available before and during the weekend. As soon as the first draft is available we will give you a link to the website. Obviously if we are unsure of your wishes, the details will not included. If you have not been included and now wish to be, please email Sharon as above. After the weekend we would then hope to move towards a final record of the project and subject to permission, have either a book, framed document or similar retained by the Church for everyone to see.

Coach trip to IWM Duxford. Thank you to Galloways who donated a coach and driver for a day as well as providing a financial donation to the project. 37 local people had a really good day out and the trip provided nearly £500 towards the appeal fund.Good cause and good day out - what more could you want!

Thank you to everyone who is working so hard to make the weekend a success.

Email received from Mendlesham Parish Council on 7 Oct 2014

Dear All,

Thought I would just let you know where we are with the memorial.

The ground level base was completed last week with no bodies needing to be dealt with so good news- we were prepared but did not know as the church records did not accurately cover that part of the churchyard as it is an older part,perhaps used in medieval times and close to the church itself.

This week the builders are starting work on the actual memorial itself and for those in the States, we have had lots of rain over the last 24 hours so as soon as we can get to take a photo we will let you know. That now presents David Nunn, our committee chairperson with the challenge of removing a couple of bricks from the old memorial to be placed in the the centre of the new and provide a link to the past.

The location of the 34th Bomb Group flag has been determined, two Stars & Stripes flags found -apparently they originally were flown at the White House so again another link between the two countries and a Union Jack Flag ordered.
Flag poles and the two flower vases are in hand and wreaths ordered.

The stone carver is on course for completion and dates arranged for him to fix the plaque with the contractors. Tomorrow, local people are going to visit him to see him work, so it can be part of a film to be shown at the Dedication event and then on our web for those of you unable to make the visit .
