Air Ministry Railway Sidings

Air Ministry Railway Sidings was created by Paul Francis
One subject not covered here is the Air Ministry sponsored railway sidings located at the existing town and village station sidings. These were often enlarged to take cement, tarmac and ammunition wagons etc, but mainly for airfield construction. There are many of these, but one important example was located at Diss Station where large cement mixing plant was erected in support of the local airfields. It is mentioned in the LNER wartime history (see Barnham), but I no longer have this book as its been returned to our stores. Has anyone photographed any of these sites or knows more about them?

Well Mr NP, you seem to have phsycic powers. I was reading that very chapter last night and was going to post tonight! Dereham was also one that I recall being mentioned. The tarmac transportation was quite interesting. Initially moved as ready made tarmac, difficult to move when cold, then later transported as dry components and mixed locally, same with cement. With tarmac it was much more efficent.
I will try to remember to add the list of stations with AM siding tonight (If Carnaby doesn't beat me to it :)). These will only be LNER so the question is where were other AM sidings.

More maps to look at!

I dont think Mr Carnaby hass received his copy yet so you will have that advantage on him, though he does have Bill Corser's book, so the race has begun!

I seem to recall Mr Chorley's book on South Witham mentions sidings at the station in SW, given the iron ore traffic in the area these may prexisted the RAF use

here's one to get you going.

Dramatic changes came to the railway at Handforth with the advent of the Second World War. The Air Ministry and the War Department established large camp sites around Handforth, part of which were rail served. Three quarters of a mile north of Handforth station in an area known as Spath Lane, a large exchange siding became established. It consisted of a reception siding, together with three other sidings; this could accommodate one hundred and twenty wagons. Because of this, the complete section of Handforth had to be re-signalled. New signal box commissioned opposite the sidings to oversee traffic entering and leaving. The box at Handforth station was switched out of service, the additional siding that had been laid five years previously became redundant. As now all coal wagons destined for Handforth station siding were left at the Air Ministry`s sidings at Spath Lane.

It hasn't arrived, and Bill's book doesn't cover the above. I was about to do a review of this excellent book, but it's almost unobtainable at present so I'll simply list the sites it covers.

The minor sites include a lot of fuel related sites.

Had a quick look at Diss, as it was mentioned earlier, and I noticed there was (is?) a tart distillery south of the station near the crossroads. Connection?
