Im very suprised to see Tain get a mention. Granted for an RAF airfield it wasnt that far from a railway line, but never seen evidence of an sidings for the place.


Where is Tain mentioned?

Wartime LMS has a list of sidings built in WWII but only AM ones are Swinderby, Tutbury, Sankey Junction and Heysham. Though some locals claim the sidings at Connel Ferry were RAF rather than Admiralty but I am inclined to think they were Admiralty.

Part 3 - Minor sites without a locomotive.

TAIN: NH850840

WWII Air Gunner training base opened in September 1941. A moving target range was set up to the north east of the airfield, in sand dunes beside a small lochlan called Loch Nan Tunnag, firing direction NNW. There were practice bombing targets to the north west of the site, although the railway was outside the bombing danger circle. The station was closed in November 1949, but the area of sand dunes is still in use as a bombing range.

I'm unconvinced about the NGR.

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite :twisted:

There were a couple of sidings at Fearn station. Could have just been normal goods traffic for the agricultural users but could they have used the station to serve both Tain and Fearn?

I believe that all of the RAF stores depots were rail fed. I remember well those at Quedgeley, Carlisle, Hartlebury and Milton.
The Quedgeley siding terminated in the Transportation Shed on HQ site. This shed normally contained at least half-a-dozen rail wagons loading or unloading.
In the 60s the siding was extended for use by the adjacent Dowmac factory
When I was serving at Quedgley (1971-3) there were two diesel locomotives operated by the MU plying to and from the main line.
According to my mother`s hazy memory (she worked there in 1917) there were sidings on the earlier site of the munitions factory during WW1, but I cannot be absolutely certain of this fact. However there was a picture taken in 1917 of the site which used to hang on the landing of the stairs in SHQ in 1973.
I wonder what happened to that picture.


Stafford's siding terminated in the Transportation shed, on arrival in march 67 I was on 14 days jankers having gone on the ale instead of duty at St Athan !! fatigues entailed crawling under railway trucks securing tarpaulins Happy Days !!!!

Indeed. Is he not referring to the 200yd MTR at NH 83785 83497? One oddity at Tain is the long track that extends NE from the end of the NE-SW runway which in parts is on stilts over the water. I thought it was to service the No.2 practice target which it terminates near but I'm not sure of its date. Incidentally the No.2 target is extant and was served by two quadrants south of the Inver Channel one either side of Skinnerton.

Are we also talking about fuel depot sidings e.g. Mountnessing, which I have plans for?

I think I can work out where the moving target range was now, and I was unaware Air Gunners were ever trained at Tain. They were trained at Evanton.

The moving target is the lines of ridges just in front of the control tower to the NW and is a closed oval track. The moving target ranges were usually site as close as possible to the Air Gunners School as in Barrow and Wigtown but some times their danger trace meant they had to be sited a distance away so Evanton would send their trainees to Tain.
