I undertook a couple of hours filming with Griff Rhys-Jones on a forthcoming programme about the Lea Valley. This included the decoy airfield at Nazeing common featured on my website ( www.wartime-airfields.com/id20.html )
The one person who did know a lot about the place was Frank Turner. He was stationed there on detachment from North Weald, he unfortunately died a few years ago.
As to if If the few minutes of film makes it on to national television remains to be seen. I was not at all happy about Mr Rhys-Jones manipulation of facts and 'good television'

one in Lincolnshire just outsied Swayfield on the road out to the Bull on the A1. If my fading memory serves there were two generator shelters, the site of one is now home to a reservoir, the other is away across the field tucked away in a hedge row.

I have not been there for at least 20 years and looking at the ariel shot it looks like some hedges have been grubbed out so apologies if all remains have gone.

There was one at Gautby, to the east of Bardney airfield. What's interesting about Gautby is that the control bunker still stands, can be sen on the link below.

If I remember correctly, there is a list of the Norfolk Decoy Sites in the back of the book "Ghost Fields of Norfolk" by Roderick McKenzie. I'll double check later when I'm at home.

Chris, thanks for the info on the Decoy farms. I thought the potential link was a bit tenuous but was worth asking the question. All info gratefully recv'd.

Jerry

not sure if you ever got to look at the Swayfield site, I was there last week, the crops were off so it was easy to see the shelter from the road, no wellies so no expedition for better shots.

Also included another site at Warmington, again no wellies and not much detail, but hope it helps.

Hi,

coincidentally I've just come across a tome in the College Hall Library at RAFC Cranwell. It's an RAF Monographs - Decoy and Deception - by the Air Historical Branch. One of the annexes is a series of maps of the whole UK showing the various locations.

Q sites: Blue dot
Starfish: Red star
QL sites: Green dot
Cover plan sites: yellow dot
K sites: letter I in blue circle
Symbols indicate the primary function of the location.

This should hopefully help identify if anyone has any gen on the other sites!

Noel, can you post a link for the download for it. My kmz files have gone missing and I need to reinstall 'em.

Cheers mate.

Chris

I'm not Noel but I was looking for this today as well and found: s192798389.websitehome.co.uk/urbex/ww2sites.kmz

Not sure if this is the exact file you were talking about but it certainly has plenty of decoy sites included, will have a good dig and compare with the RAF monograph from my previous post.

Hmm how many thousand acres is a blue dot worth?. This map is next to useless.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
